KIS 11.0.1.400(a)
If you never hear the lightning, on the next attempt when you open image files, the whole Windows will finally freeze up. Task Manager cannot stop the running processes anymore and reboot/shutdown takes forever.
So how can you fix this?
The original idea is to exit and then restart your KIS from your taskbar: provided that you have done this on the first sign when COM Surrogate or Windows Picture Viewer start unresponding (not until the whole thing freeze up already). And of course this also depends if your taskbar is also responsive at that rate. This makes this idea a bit unreliable.

So this is where I introduce a new idea to stop this madness. I have updated my KIS build since its first-day release of the (a) patch. I have also experienced this error since that day and applied the method below for weeks. So far, KIS does not trouble me anymore with the COM Surrogate so I think it is safe for me to publish this article and share this before the next patch (b) is released to fix this problem.
Follow these steps to fix the problem between KIS and Windows Picture Viewer:
1. From the top right corner of KIS 2011 main window, click Settings.

Click Settings on the top right corner of KIS 2011
2. From the left pane of the Protection Center tab, choose Application Control and click the Applications... button on the right pane.

Application Control > Applications...
3. Expand the MICROSOFT folder (this may take time for KIS to load the list. Be patient.) and find COM Surrogate.
Find COM Surrogate under MICROSOFT folder
4. Right click COM Surrogate and choose Application rules.... Alternatively, you can just double click on it. If you are using Windows x64, you will find 2 COM Surrogate-s (as shown above screenshot). Both are also responsible for dll.exe in system32 and syswow64 folders. Do step 4 and 5 twice for these 2 COM Surrogate-s.
5. Now from the Exclusions tab, tick the 2nd box: Do not monitor application activity and press Ok/Apply all the way.

And you are done. Now KIS should not trouble you anymore or freezing the whole Windows up if you open image files. As I have mentioned earlier, this fix is on the work and should be released soon by Kaspersky on the next patch (b). Meanwhile, you can use this trick to temporarily fix the problem.
If you have not known, I have been a Kaspersky fan for 3 years now. Kaspersky has never failed to protect me from various malicious online attacks. It may be a bit heavy for some computers to load but it is not the worst resource hogger. If you are looking for good and reliable internet security suite with decent price, I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS). You can refer to this benchmark test by Raymond for the detailed comparison among the famous antivirus softwares: Antivirus Performance Benchmark Test.

Thanks for your visit. Glad that this article can help you.
Hi, thanks a lot, this help me out. I lost a lot of hours trying to figure out the problem.
This is the first time I have problems with KIS.
Thank you very much, you're the man.
It was too my first issue encounter with KIS. Great to be a help.
It worked! Big thank you! Hope KIS makes a patch for this.
wow it really fixes my problem. thank you. subscribed!
Hi there, will this work for me as well if I don't get the "COM Surrogate has stopped working" error pop up? :)
My Windows Picture Viewer just constantly sprouts a "Not Responding" error whenever I try viewing my photos/pictures ever since I installed KIS 2011.
There is no way of force closing Picture Viewer, even with the task manager. Eventually, my computer completely locks up and the only way to get it going again is a reset.
I'm at work, hence why I am unable to try this fix for myself, but I will definitely try it out when I get home :)
Thanks,
Nathan
Hi Nathan, yes this trick will still work. The first sign it shows you that "Not Responding" note. However, just like what I mentioned in the post, the second or third time when your Picture Viewer becomes unresponsive, it will show the COM Surrogate error and that is when everything is frozen, that what you can only do will only by hard-booting the computer. That is why you also need to apply this fix.
thank you very much... i nearly format my laptop because of this prob....now it solved....thanks once again..may god bless u...^_^
The Application tab is not there
Only
General Settings
File Anti-Virus
Mail Anti-Virus
Web Anti-Virus
IM Anti-Virus
System watcher
Proactive Defense
Please rewrite this so I can stop having my computer crash if I want to view photos
@Anonymous: Then I believe the Kaspersky you are using is Kaspersky Anti Virus (KAV). This trick applies only for Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS). As KAV does not have the Firewall built-in, application monitoring etc, hence KAV should not cause the problem with Picture Viewer, if you have yours crashing. Instead you may need to refer to other articles that can help you fix the problem. Contact me if you cannot find any fix.
Well done! You've saved me a lot of heart ache, my beloved took receipt of her brand new laptop today, downloaded KIS 2011 and crash, crash, crash!! Holiday photos being uploaded :).
We've used KIS for a couple of years now, our other kit has 2010 and no problems.
thanks a lot, all seems to be content across the sitting room :)
This problem with KAV was driving me nuts. Your solution works. Thank you, thank you and thank you again!
You are all welcome. Great to be a help for you guys.
I gave it a whirl and have not had success...at least not yet. The error message I get now is different: "This action cannot be completed because the file is open in COM Surrogate". I figure you would be the best person to run this by. I've been a huge fan of KIS as well. In hindsight, this started after I had done the upgrade to 11. I had also been trying out a couple of new (to me) programs and was actually thinking it was their fault and deleted them. Coincidentally KIS had detected two different Trojans and I took appropriate actions. I have an avatar I created in IrfanView and was trying to move the file into my Avatar folder. That's when I started fiddling with finding a solution to the COM Surrogate issue. I run a 64 bit version of Windows 7 Professional and did the instructions for both COM folders as you said. I have not tried to reboot or anything yet. I'm fixing to shut this sucker down since it's 3:24am and I've been working since 11am yesterday morning. My brain is no longer a fully functional entity. My email is pliko.0987@gmail.com if I screw up this post in my dilapidated state of mind. I caught myself laughing maniacally and pressing random candy-like buttons on the keyboard. It's time to shut down. Thanks for the advice already given! I'm glad it has done good for everybody and figure there is something I may be overlooking.
Quick update: The fix appeared to have worked somewhat after I rebooted my computer after shutting it down the night before. The only thing that seems suspicious is that any time I try to attach an image to a post or reply in Facebook after viewing it in the Windows Picture Viewer or the download page, the email, message, or post will not go through unless I delete the image. It just seems strangely coincidental that is happening when the Com Surrogate issue dealt with Windows Picture Viewer also. Any ideas out there? No error messages anymore, though! :D
I'm looking forward to the KIS patch.
Thank you so much!!!
ur a genius bro, keep it up
