Quick update: The fix appeared to have worked somewhat after I rebooted my computer after shutting it down the night before. The only thing that seems suspicious is that any time I try to attach an image to a post or reply in Facebook after viewing it in the Windows Picture Viewer or the download page, the email, message, or post will not go through unless I delete the image. It just seems strangely coincidental that is happening when the Com Surrogate issue dealt with Windows Picture Viewer also. Any ideas out there? No error messages anymore, though! :D

I gave it a whirl and have not had success...at least not yet. The error message I get now is different: "This action cannot be completed because the file is open in COM Surrogate". I figure you would be the best person to run this by. I've been a huge fan of KIS as well. In hindsight, this started after I had done the upgrade to 11. I had also been trying out a couple of new (to me) programs and was actually thinking it was their fault and deleted them. Coincidentally KIS had detected two different Trojans and I took appropriate actions. I have an avatar I created in IrfanView and was trying to move the file into my Avatar folder. That's when I started fiddling with finding a solution to the COM Surrogate issue. I run a 64 bit version of Windows 7 Professional and did the instructions for both COM folders as you said. I have not tried to reboot or anything yet. I'm fixing to shut this sucker down since it's 3:24am and I've been working since 11am yesterday morning. My brain is no longer a fully functional entity. My email is pliko.0987@gmail.com if I screw up this post in my dilapidated state of mind. I caught myself laughing maniacally and pressing random candy-like buttons on the keyboard. It's time to shut down. Thanks for the advice already given! I'm glad it has done good for everybody and figure there is something I may be overlooking.

Well done! You've saved me a lot of heart ache, my beloved took receipt of her brand new laptop today, downloaded KIS 2011 and crash, crash, crash!! Holiday photos being uploaded :).

We've used KIS for a couple of years now, our other kit has 2010 and no problems.

@Anonymous: Then I believe the Kaspersky you are using is Kaspersky Anti Virus (KAV). This trick applies only for Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS). As KAV does not have the Firewall built-in, application monitoring etc, hence KAV should not cause the problem with Picture Viewer, if you have yours crashing. Instead you may need to refer to other articles that can help you fix the problem. Contact me if you cannot find any fix.

Hi Nathan, yes this trick will still work. The first sign it shows you that "Not Responding" note. However, just like what I mentioned in the post, the second or third time when your Picture Viewer becomes unresponsive, it will show the COM Surrogate error and that is when everything is frozen, that what you can only do will only by hard-booting the computer. That is why you also need to apply this fix.

Hi there, will this work for me as well if I don't get the "COM Surrogate has stopped working" error pop up? :)

My Windows Picture Viewer just constantly sprouts a "Not Responding" error whenever I try viewing my photos/pictures ever since I installed KIS 2011.

There is no way of force closing Picture Viewer, even with the task manager. Eventually, my computer completely locks up and the only way to get it going again is a reset.

I'm at work, hence why I am unable to try this fix for myself, but I will definitely try it out when I get home :)
